I agree a part of the Japanese concept.
When I went to America, I was surprised that there are no wall around the house. In addition there are few wall in the house.Rolf said that it's accordind the place. For example there are no wall in country side like Nebraska where I went because it is far btween thehouse and house. But there are many walls in city like New York because space is very narrow.
In Japan we have not so big ground, so it is nessesarry to have a lot of wall. And there are the word "Honne to tatemae" in Japan. It means that Japanese has two faces. One is for outside, and another is for inside. So Japanese may think that by making the wall we can draw the line.

a. I think that we go to the place where ancestor is when we die.
b. It's one of the religiouse rule. In buddhism people believe that they go to heaven or hell after they die and there are long road for judging people. So survivor wish dead can go heaven. 1 month, 1 year, 3 years, and 7 years mean the day of judge.
